Interest in organizing a "FediMusicForum"?

Would there be any interest in organizing a fedimusicforum?

(Context: I have moved the comment above to a new topic.)

Interest, absolutely, but a driving team would be needed. If the objectives are specific and humble, it shouldn’t be that difficult to organize a first edition, and we can always iterate and improve from there.

Thanks for moving it into a more visible space!

I wonder if there’s any takers. I can post it on our socials.

I’d be up for helping to make this happen.

I’d love to know more and to help with it if possible!

@simon thank you for mirlo.space: "Is there any interest in standing up a music-spec…" - Musician.Social – there is more interesting feedback there.

What objectives would the first “FediMusicForum” have, and how would success look like?

Just spitballing some thoughts:

  • Bringing people working on same projects together into a space (virtual or in person, imo) to get to know each other, build community, and camraderie
  • Get introduced to new projects, learn what they’re doing, and how they operate
  • Maybe start spitballing on standards, learn about what already exists
  • Ground on why we’re doing this work, political education

I guess, ideally, it’s a little bit this space, but synchronously rather than asynchronously. I think for some people that’s a little more accessible.

I also don’t think this has to be a big One Off event, but could be something we do a couple of times?

Thank you @simon, these are good ideas that help focus your proposal.

We could have two types of sessions:

  • Single-project sessions, where each project presents what are they working on and what comes next + ask me anything.
  • Cross-project topics, delicious nuts hard to crack, to be discussed by people from different teams (interested in) working on them.

Instead of scheduling sessions 8 hours in a row in 1-2 days, we could schedule confirmed sessions during one “FediMusic Week” (or similar name) trying to schedule each session at a time that works for most people interested.

And to decentralize the organizations and the hosts, we could distribute the hosting of session between different artists and projects with experience in streaming / presenting / facilitating and also with their own streaming corner.

How does this sound?

All of that sounds great!

I like the idea of splitting up the times rather than scheduling them all in a row – that could also help address @futzle’s point about having at least some sessions that make it easier for people in geographies that aren’t so US- and Europe-centric.

I’d love to host a session to present and have discussion about The Indie Beat. It might make sense for Ben Pate and I to do a joint session, if he’s into it.

I’d be excited for this entire event. For me, I know it would present a big opportunity to learn more, and more deeply, about what the community really needs. And it’d enable me to get to know everybody better.

Yes. I’ll be there. I’m happy to do a joint session with you. If we have enough time in the schedule, we might just do separate sessions on each platform. I’ll certainly attend any discussions about TheIndieBeat

Ok, thank you! This is taking shape.

Deadlines are useful. On which week could the FediMusicForum week take place? The reloaded FediForum takes place on June 5-7, 2025, so not that week. Before that it would be too soon to organize, why the stress. Please express your preference in this quick survey, and add any comments below.

  • June 9-15
  • June 16-22
  • June 23-29
  • A week of July
  • A week of August
  • A week of September
  • A week of October

Meanwhile, in addition to project sessions, which cross-project topics could we discuss? This is an invitation to brainstorm: throw any ideas! We will collect all the ideas and agree on a way to select the few we want to focus on.

Looking forward to it!

One topic potentially worth discussion: how could general-purpose federated social media platforms like Mastodon, GoToSocial, etc, and apps like Ivory / Tusky / etc, evolve to work better with music-focused software? I don’t have anything specific in mind here, but it seems like a potentially-fruitful area …

I have lots of well-informed opinions on this issue

It sounds like there is strong interest in this, but in the fall.

What about making a category for planning the event itself, and we can start with a session recommendations thread?

Yes, it’s been a week and I have closed the poll. I think we can decide that it’s going to be in September, and then choose the specific days based on the availability of the presenters.

Creating a category dedicated to the event is a good idea. I’ll do it later.

I am interested in this but honestly don’t have an idea what this will look like. Excited to see how it plays out
