I’d really like to see us share, articulate, and declare our individual and shared dreams and visions for the future of indie music.
I see this as being a specific activity and outcome, not just something that happens organically as part of the other objectives. In fact, I think it’d make a great theme for the inaugural event. (But I will still love you all if you shoot that down, ha!)
Note that I didn’t include anything about the fediverse in this. One shortcoming of Fediforum in my opinion is that most of it comes from a “here’s what we can do with the protocol” origin (aka technology in search of a problem to solve).
I’d like to see us intentionally create a culture of always starting with the problem or aspiration of the artist vs “what can federation do for you today?”
By declaring the future we’re here to realize, instead of the technologies we’re going to build, I think we could avoid the trap that Fediforum falls into.
I’d like to see Fedi Music Forum include music performances. Is that weird?
We kind of have an advantage over stuff that’s exclusively tech based, in that we have a shared reason for coming together: music. So we could potentially include more casual hangouts and socialising in a way that’s normally difficult with online events.
I also think we could potentially offer funded performance slots. I’m working on an application now that could include fees for UK-based artists. And would be happy to help anyone who wants to try the same with EU/international arts organisations? (This would be for next year’s one, September is too soon for funding cycles!)
I just reckon showing the vibrant scene we have here is important. Why would people want an alternative to mainstream music and social platforms? One possible reason: there is interesting art being made over here! Our scene is self-selecting artists with a strong ethical and political bent.
Fedi MTV sounds incredible. And you’re exactly right. People don’t necessarily want to be told about the bad side of music listening, but they might switch to something else if it looks way more fun than their current offering.
I had once built a Fedi MTV and it was a total failure. I couldn’t get anybody to provide music videos. I begged for anything anybody had that was a video with their music. From fully produced videos to them doing a live performance. I had absolutely no interest from anybody, and was told that nobody has videos.
I see so many independently created music videos online that I know that’s not the case, but I just couldn’t get any interest in any direction. So I shut it down.
Instead, I told controlfreak I wish he’d make an audio-only version of what I was trying to do with video. Clearly he had more success.
The perils of being “before one’s time” @gabek! Yeah I do come across a fair few on Peertube now, too. Fuck yeah, as we’ve seen with controlfreak collating all those links, contacting artists to opt-in, asking for links and license info, that is basically a full time job in itself…
My ambitions are more modest, maybe start with one show! “Fedi 120 Minutes”, more like, heheh
Side note, the NHAM website has a nice video section: Watch – NHAM
It’s the opposite of weird! Seeing you say this makes me think that the music, itself should be woven into all aspects of FediMusicForum. It would be amazing to have artists debuting new work during the event
