Alright, so it’s taken long enough to get it sorted and it looked very intimidating at first but how did I not know about all the extra stuff you get on PeerTube vs. YouTube?!
- You can create an account for your label or community group and then create channels for each artist (or different channels for live, shorts, etc) - feel like this gives so much more context to things and looks way friendlier. You don’t have to link people via playlists, everyone’s just displayed and has control over their own thing.
- The server mod can allow replacing of videos. Exported your video and only realised after loads of comments and sharing the link everywhere that there’s a HUGE typo in your lyrics? Cool cool, you can replace it. Magic.
- Following channels from the Fediverse is an incredible thing, so no messing around with signing in and out of different platforms. Can reply to comments on Mastodon too.
- Don’t have to think of loads of tags in the hope some algorithm picks them up. There’s only room for 5, if you want to add them.
- Interface actually feels easier to use than YouTube.
- When I subscribe to other folks, I actually see them.
- A “support” button is just a given. No having to reach ridiculous thresholds.
- Analytics that aren’t majorly in your face and the metrics seem to be in the background, which is a good design choice. We all have enough admin to do.
- No ads. That’s the most obvious one. Don’t have to hear about Grammarly 100 times in the space of a few videos.
Obviously there’s a few things that are different (be good to set upload defaults and what have you), but overall, it’s not as scary-looking or involved as I thought it would be and I just hope more folks start either sharing their existing channels or joining/creating servers on there!
