This spring, with support from the DC Co-op Impact Grant, Mirlo partnered with local collective KiaZii to host the Music Movement at Rhizome, a collectively owned space in DC. The event was a vibrant gathering that brought together 60 musicians, organizers, and cultural workers to reflect, learn, and reimagine the music industry through solidarity and cooperation. The event featured three panels (on funding, media, and mutual aid), interspersed with performances by KiaZii-affiliated artists, establishing a rhythm of learning and creative expression. Panelists from DCP Entertainment, Food Not Bombs, Hearing Things, Baltimore Round Table for Economic Democracy, and the DC Commission on the Arts created a dynamic and diverse space.
The forum also marked the launch of KiaZii’s digital album KAMP KIAZII on Mirlo’s platform—a testament to how the event nurtured both immediate and long-term creative outcomes. Challenges like outreach and capacity were mitigated through KiaZii’s grassroots networks and volunteer team, proving the strength of local partnerships.
Looking ahead, we will be distilling lessons from the forum into a Solidarity Economy Zine for DC artists and exploring ways to integrate mutual aid tools directly into Mirlo’s platform. The event’s alternating panel/performance format—which fostered both learning and organic connection—will inspire future gatherings, including future collaborations with the KiaZii folks. Most importantly, the forum demonstrated how small, artist-led spaces can challenge industry norms while nurturing practical alternatives.
Huge thanks to KiaZii’s visionary organizers, Rhizome DC’s radical hospitality, and all the panelists, performers, and attendees who made this possible. Want to stay involved?
