Substack's revenue curve and the long tail

Components tries to reverse engineer the income levels of big platforms and then draws conclusions from them. They’re usually interesting things.

Good article! Substack is certainly still in a hype cycle/bubble. Direct subscription models in general might all have similar characteristics? I’m thinking Twitch, Patreon, Ghost in particular.

uhh, that is a good one, thanx @simon for sharing. Many interesting angles to digital economy, especially the platforming aspect of it and a good insight to how monetisation model helps to steer the entire platform for more equal distribution of money among its creators.

Few critical thoughts. Author speaks very well about the desire economy but maybe not so much about the economy of desire. The argument that we desire to make sense and navigate the world around us is valid to the extent, but I’m sure there are plenty of counterproductive desires that are addressed elsewhere. I feel the entire “sense making” argument sounds very much as it is constructed by the writers themselves and I think this is a good approach.

Especially if compared with the music making community who’s main drive seems to be the exposure. Why are we are so eager to give away our music for free just to earn clicks and by this subsidise the big corporations, who’s platforms we are using? Makes me wonder.

Yeah, I decided to give Ghost a chance. Remains to be seen whether I can make money off it. At least it’s not nazi-friendly like Substack.

As an aside, here’s the Google Analytics data for my Ghost site which has been up for a couple of months.

I don’t know where the 4969 number comes from, but the 157 users come in large part from southeast Asia. I advertise the site and selected articles on various fedi accounts I have and Bluesky.
