Evolving proposal

An opinionated attempt to organize them by slot:

  1. Default Like: :purple_heart: – better than :+1: ?
  2. Like it a lot:  – better than  :tada: ?
  3. Funny: :joy:
  4. Surprise: :exploding_head: – better than :open_mouth: ?
  5. Seen: :eyes:
  6. Hmmmm:
  7. Nah: :skull_and_crossbones: – better than :-1: :x: ?
  8. NOOOOO: :scream: better than  ?

Out: :face_with_peeking_eye: and :white_check_mark:

We can change the emojis available in the emoji reactions. Please propose a specific emoji.

lol! Have you been to a gravitons stream?! I don’t know when to stop…

Here’s an appropriate selection for most of the music industry:
:scream:
:goblin:
:skull_and_crossbones:
:face_with_peeking_eye:
Although I would feel a bit offended if I done a heartfelt post about my own music and someone replied

Edit: took out Moonface. It doesn’t have the right coy, secretive expression here

Then others might feel even more offended. I’m for emojis reactions that express a clear reaction that might be positive or critical too (not just happy flowers) but not getting even close to offensive to anyone.

goblin

I would remove this one too. It’s a legit traditional character and it may have very different (and unclear) connotations depending of the audience.

Another idea. I like hearts but I’m bored of red hearts . Overexploited. What about :purple_heart: or :green_heart:? We could also go for the more logo-consistent :orange_heart: but looks meh (to me). I know, all this is 100% subjective! Please share your subjectivisms too.

i guess the question nobody asked yet is – how many kinds of reaction do you think would be too many? i’m all for having the full set like we do in the chat pane. but i see discourse is making a slightly more elaborate thing out of post reacts, so not really an option, right?

(and, anyway, unicode doesn’t yet contain the eminently humane “grin with missing tooth” or the absolutely essential “banging my head against the wall”)

i like :orange_heart: :purple_heart: :green_heart: in no particular order! agree that red hearts are overused.

the classic :+1: (“i agree with this and have nothing to add”) and :-1: (“i disagree with this and have nothing to add”) are clear and unambiguous. i think they should not be overlooked.

(anyone else remember the hue and cry when youtube removed the thumbs-down counter in a presumable effort to “stay positive”, i.e. prevent people from seeing how exactly not alone they are in disliking something? even an  react could be fine if it allows people to express strong dislike without fanning the flames any further. guess not what this space is going for though)

i find :person_shrugging: to be borderline offensive. there’s hardly any situation in which it’d be appropriate to react to someone’s post only with explicit indifference – if you really didn’t give a shit, why would you want to signal it at all? (i use it in my posts alongside text for “either way is fine”)

otoh i think  is good for “i’m honestly not certain”; and i’m also partial to :eyes: or :white_check_mark: in the sense of “acnowledged!” (i.e. not liking or disliking, but taking into account)

:hugs: strikes me as kinda creepy. i’d very much like to be able to express greater joy at certain posts than a heart or a thumbs-up – but a full-blown “*glomp*”? hell nah!

a “playing this” emoji? :speaker_high_volume: :musical_notes:

a “mind blown” emoji? :exploding_head:

the existential horror emoji. :scream:

interesting – does discourse ship its own emoji font that makes them look the same on all platforms, or does it use the system default ones, which are different on every OS?

I suggest first we add emojis we would like to consider, and when we agree that this is the list to be considered, we start cutting.

I have updated the top post with the current emojis (8) and the ones I deduce that stand a chance based on this initial conversation (16).

I haven’t added a couple you have mentioned in relation to commenting to music because we are not planning to share music here.

On mobile, the current 8 reactions already take basically the display width. I suggest we aim to stay with 8 and see what happens.

WHAT, ONLY EIGHT??? Well, yes, emoji reactions are fine but let’s not overdo them. Their purpose in our context is to give your feedback on a post. We can complicate things and do some research, or we can agree that we will stick with 8 and we will try to find a good range.

Chats are chats, lighter and shorter in nature. Discussions here are meant to be productive, and we don’t need a) a zoo of emojis and b) a psychologist assisting our posters trying to understand what are people trying to tell them.

Also, there are two types of emojis in discussions:

  • “Like”:  and right now all the rest, they count for trust level improvements.
  • Neutral / not-like: they don’t count for trust level.

Therefore, when selecting emojis we’ll need to agree if any of them are not-like.

To @Mel’s initial point, which would be the “No” emoji?

I have added to the description an opinionated attempt to organize them by slot. Some thoughts just in case anyone cares.

  1. Default Like: :purple_heart: – get it?
  2. Like it a lot:  – tough contenders but this one is the sweetest and this harsh world needs more sweetness.
  3. Funny: :joy: – enough said.
  4. Surprise: :exploding_head: – same as the ones above, bring it to the extreme.
  5. Hmmmm:  – enough said.
  6. The ambiguous one: :face_with_peeking_eye: – don’t ask me why, I think it captures subjective emotions the other ones lack.
  7. Nah: :skull_and_crossbones: – friendly nah.
  8. NOOOOO: :scream: – friendly NOOOOO

A note on nah / NOOOOO, and other “oppose” emojis. Avoiding the explicitly opposing ones is not just about trying to soften (that too, a bit). It’s also that all the variants of support don’t need an explanation. An emoji reactions i better than “Very good!” types of comments. But if someone strongly opposes a post, an emoji reaction alone won’t do, won’t help, and an explanation is what will help the discussion.

Not bad!

Gotta admit, :skull_and_crossbones: works surprisingly well for “friendly nah”! (because of the ironic overexaggeration – it’s not like someone’s really gonna leave a skull and 2 bones out of anyone for disagreeing!)

I’ve seen  in the sense of “whoa, too much!”. Personally I like facemelting stuff! But either way I don’t immediately parse it as “like it a lot”. What are everyone else’s impressions on that one?

Ideally, yes. Nevertheless, I think it’s acceptable to just signal disagreement and carry on doing your thing without necessarily engaging further – maybe one just doesn’t have the spoons to articulate, or doesn’t find it useful to debate at the given moment. Still valid.

Disagree. I think “gotcha/understood” as orthogonal to “like”/“dislike” is important to have.

Not completely clear which one of these are meant to be “point-giving” and which are going to be null. At this point it’d be nice to categorize them by that feature in the wiki post. (Although with a healthy volume of productive conversation it probably wouldn’t matter that much?)

Thank you @unspeaker, very useful feedback. I think with this we can get a v0.9 good enough for the beta and/or until someone has strong reasons to request changes.

I have updated the emoji reactions and the heart color:

:purple_heart: :exploding_head:   :skull_and_crossbones: :scream: :eyes: :joy:

(The heart still looks red when you want to select an emoji, but changing that is harder.)

These emoji reactions are meant to be just this: emotional reactions. If we have situation where we need to count people’s positions, then we can use the “Build Poll” feature, which is a better tool for this task. Anyone can publish a poll in any post (open the editor and click the :gear: icon).

Good work @icaria36! I think we’re on track with this :tada:

I meant in regard of this:

Are any of the newly configured ones “not-like”? (My opinion would be that it’s perfectly OK for all of them to count towards trust level.)

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood. Yes, I had the same thought. All these emoji reactions count towards trust level.
