Curious to hear what people think has made FediForum a success in the past, what they would like to change, etc. We’ve seen some answers along those lines, but it would be good to get more concrete thoughts so that we can inform how we organize the FediMusicForum (keeping in mind that we can’t be everything to everyone).
One thing I’ve heard a lot of people want to change about Fediforum is the tendency for every session to end up being dominated by people talking tech and protocol, even if that’s not what the session is supposed to be about. I’m a technologist. I like talking tech. But not everything is solved by tech
I’d like to see FediMusicForum have very clear tracks or some mechanism for keeping tech talk in tech sessions as much as possible.
I’d also like to see some kind of “rules of order” provided that people are implicitly agreeing to by participating (or that session leaders can invoke for their sessions). I don’t just mean anti-harassment and stuff like that. I’m looking for social protocols (not technical, ha!) that give participants a permission structure to get a session back on track or claim space for less loud voices, etc. There are probably some people in this forum who have experience with these kinds of rules of order and who can perhaps make suggestions. I used to know some, myself, when I hung out with the NorCal anarchists 20 years ago. But I’ve forgotten them all now!
One thing I like a lot about Fediforum are the artifacts that remain after it’s over. I like being able to re-watch recordings of demos. I like being able to look at the notes from sessions.
Hi, FediForum organizer here Would be happy to collaborate on an event if you are interested. FediForum | Contact
@j12t thank you for your offer! We are still figuring out what FediMusicForum will be. How do you imagine this collaboration? What could you offer and how could FediMusicForum contribute back to FediForum?
We’ve been thinking of doing shorter, more focused events for a while. Either focused on geography (such as FediForum Europe) or subject matter / industry (e.g. for journalists). This would likely always be done with partners from that domain. The basic idea would be to build bridges between the needs of the particular domain (and the people in it) with the broader open social web community, but the details can differ. I assume you had an online event in mind? Conference-style? Unconference-style? …? What do you think the most important/interesting thing that could come out of such an event would be?
Thanks for connecting with us on this! Yeah, I would propose:
- online
- a mixture of tech/dev & social/political focused sessions, and live music performance or “new work premiere” showcases
- free to access, but donations to speakers & musicians received (too late for this year, but for next year we can try to apply for various sources of funding)
Goals:
- Highlight why the music ecosystem needs a big change
- Encourage and enable collaboration and interoperability between platforms
- Showcase the Fediverse’s vibrant music scenes, to encourage other musicians and music lovers to join in
- Showcase the new platforms being built, encourage musicians and music lovers to try them
