There is a good analogy that I have come across whereby you can think about people’s relationships as banks. Both people in a relationship start out with a balance of 0, and over time start building up interest in each others bank accounts through positive interactions, helping each other, etc.
Then if something negative happens, that might take some out of the bank account for one of the people, but if they have built up enough ‘relationship points’ (I will call them) then it’s okay. It’s still in the positive. However, if there is a string of constant negative experiences, then there is a possibility that the bank account may go into the negative. Perhaps that is okay for a little bit, but it really depends on how the relationship has built up over time.
If there is no prior relationship and positive interactions, then if there are consistent negative experiences and the accounts go further into the negative, then that usually breaks the relationship.
So, I feel like this can relate to what you are saying here in some respects.
