That’s exactly what I was wondering! The consent issue with federation.
Is it always clear that people are replying to a forum, instead of a post?
If people delete their Masto post (or have an auto-delete), does that deletion federate to the forum?
I love the possibilities with AP, but been wondering about that aspect. Will join the Discourse Discourse in a bit, just trying to switch my brain off for the evening
@Mel I don't know how accurate Mastodon > Discourse federation is. Let's check. Now I'm icaria36-Mastodon. I'm replying to you, but I'm going to regret.
First I will check if this reply appears on TSMN.
EDIT: Yes, it appeared instantly.
If it does, I will edit this post, and see whether the TSMN version changes as well.
Then, I will delete this post , check whether it is deleted in TSMN, and report back.
Yes, my edit appeared here also instantly, but when I deleted my post on Mastodon… I got a 404 on Mastodon, as far as I can see the post is deleted there, but it remains here, as you can see above.
I was thinking more an of an indicator in the reply form that the post is going to be broadcast to Fedi – and having a toggle to opt out from doing that in the first place. Once it’s out, I realize all bets are off!
Same…
Still having occasional issues looking up posts by URL from Mastodon – while it keeps working without a hitch from Misskey
Surely not, but… Is it always clear on Mastodon that you are replying to… a Pixelfed, PeerTube, Funkwhale, etc? Does it matter? You are replying to a federated conversation, and federated things will happen (hopefully).
There is a mix of permissions in play, but leaving that out… The topic opener does have 5 minutes to react (edit, delete, not-federate…) after posting. But the replies are instantaneous. This makes sense considering that the setting is “federate all posts”. There is no setting for “federate all posts but give 5 minutes to each person replying”.
It does, doesn’t it Maybe the admins on either side peeking into the server logs would shed some light?
So replies from Discourse to a federated topic don’t show in the feed? Sounds like a bit of a problem…
(Unless it’s due to the recent switching on and off of federation while this space is figuring out whether the available privacy mechanisms are sufficient? Then it’s still a problem, but not a whole new one)
