Freeing artists from addictive social media: Fedi broadcast idea

Using CC licenses and making money aren’t mutually exclusive. For a start there’s CC licenses with a NonCommercial clause, like CC BY-NC, which have the same restrictions on commercial use as an ARR (All Rights Reserved) license. But as I pointed out recently in another thread, it’s well documented that ARR licenses help corporate intermediaries make money off other people’s art, far more than they’ve ever helped artists make money off their own. 25 years into digital distribution of music, it’s pretty clear that there’s no way to force people to pay, so why not use more pro-sharing licenses?

Nor is there any need for ARR or NC licenses, or DRM, or any other attempt to make a digital rock a computer can’t lift, because most music fans want to pay artists. We just need to find ways to make that easy to do. Maybe by building music purchasing into the apps for music discovery and listening.

The social media bidding war for audience attention is the result of corporate platforms siphoning off most of the money paid by audiences, primarily for themselves and their shareholders, and to a lesser extent for established artists with major label backing. What I want, as a music fan, is to be able to discover music in the fediverse, through fan-run discovery channels like Indie Beat Radio and the NewsMast Music Channel. So all musicians have to do is release their recordings on a service that automatically makes them discoverable to those channels.
