Discoverability on the Fediverse and Thought Dump

Similarly, has anyone used this?

I did when they first came out - I used the free codes you get along with the free Bandcamp codes. Unfortunately to you use it you are paying twice - once for codes from Bandcamp and again for codes at getmusic.fm

I’ve been wishing someone would spin up a #foss and hopefully federated version of getmusic.fm (and I think there are others like it) so at least artists only have to pay once at Bandcamp.

Although I gained almost all of my followers at BC through this it didn’t really do much for me other than that hollow follow.

I do like it as a way to tell people I know how to get started getting off of spotify and start building their own music again… it is a great way for someone to start a small collection of indie music. A gateway drug for them… but again not sure I’ve actually converted anyone 100%

Thanks for all this! I did wonder, as when I used to give out codes on Twitter, the same thing would happen and then they’d drop off when I sent a message or had a new release. :grimacing:

FYI the BandCamp site now tries to run JavaScript from recaptcha.net, a domain controlled by Goggle. In the mobile browser I’m currenty using (WebLibre) I can’t listen to a song there without running that JS. That’s pretty much the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. Replacing BC with a federated system has gone from a nice-to-have to an urgent priority.

I wonder if anyone has thoughts on:

Breaking out of our bubbles.

It’s lovely to strengthen the community we already have, hanging out on Fedi. But on the discoverability topic, how can we expand beyond the networks we already have?

Some very DIY starting points:

  • cross-promotion with artists who have similar vibes and sounds
  • making radio programs that are interesting DJ mixes: artistic statements. Trying to air them on our local community or independent radio stations (as well as online or specifically Fedi livestream/radio projects)
  • In-person events: casual gigs, happenings or installations that are also live-streamed, and bringing the live audience in on the craic/interaction that’s happening on stream chat

I love the installation idea and given that traditional gigging is a bit of a nightmare at times, it’s something I’m really keen to explore - same with livestreams. Weirdly, Ryde has two arts centre-type places as well, so it isn’t outside the realm of possibility.

So this is basically just a way for artists to publicly share codes and them then automatically to be marked as claimed to the user?

In the week after the site’s initial launch, I promoted one of my releases and gained more followers on Bandcamp than I have after a year of self-promotion.

This feels like it’s conflating some cause and effect here hah.

I smiled when I read that part. #WOOT

Yea, I’m feeling this. Makes so much sense.

Big up’s.

We’re set up, and sorted. Also, got something already developed and ready to go, Right Now, as we’ve discussed. (really nice chat) We’re ready to Collab on every part of this.

Someone in the comments on recent news mentioned discoverability features on an old music piracy place called What.CD.
Does anybody here remember how it worked and maybe how different it was from other discoverability methods ?
